Stardom - Osaka Dream Cinderella 2020 (12/20/2020)

1. Future of Stardom Championship: Maika (c) vs. Saya Iida vs. Saya Kamitani

A hot opening match characterized by excessive movement and hard hitting. Iida's small body is packed with explosive power, just like the Dynamite Kid. I was impressed with how convincingly she was able to crush her larger opponents.

***1/2

3. Oedo Tai (Bea Priestley & Saki Kashima) vs. Donna del Mondo (Himeka & Natsupoi)

This was quite a good match for an early mid card match, but considering the talent, the quality was perhaps not so surprising. Everyone played to their strengths very well.

***1/4

4. High Speed Championship: AZM (c) vs. Mei Hoshizuki

The sense of speed here was amazing, it felt like they were wrestling on super turbo. Mei applied relentless pressure, but AZM's potent ground game gave her an edge. There were light-speed pinning exchanges and some dangerous near falls towards the end.

****

5. Artist of Stardom Championship - Elimination: Cosmic Angels (Tam Nakano, Mina Shirakawa & Unagi Sayaka) (c) vs. STARS (Mayu Iwatani, Starlight Kid & Gokigen DEATH)

This was an enjoyable trios match that had very unexpected developments. What seemed to be the culmination of the Mayu-Tam feud, turned out to be just another dramatic chapter. I’ve been impressed with Starlight Kid lately, she seems to have gotten stronger judging from the height she’s been getting on her standing moonsault recently and I love the bullish attitude she’s been showing in this feud.

***3/4

6. Wonder of Championship / SWA World Championship: Giulia (c) vs. Syuri (c)

A meticulously paced, intense and violent brawl. High-level strikes and dangerous techniques over the course of 30-minutes. They built this epic match brilliantly, from the early back work coming into play at the end to the deep character work. Giulia truly pushed Syuri, who usually has a narrower style of wrestling, out of her comfort zone and brought the best fight out of the rugged veteran. It was even more dramatic that such a performance would come just a week after Giulia was awarded the Tokyo Sports Women's Grand Prize.

****3/4

7. World of Championship: Utami Hayashishita (c) vs. Momo Watanabe

What this lacked in emotional depth, it made up for in dynamic, explosive exchanges and some well-placed counters. It was amazing to see two young Stardom pure-borns main event a large-scale event like this.

Mei Suruga & Baliyan Akki vs. Emi Sakura & Kaori Yoneyama (ChocoPro, 12/5/2020)

ChocoPro - #71 (12/5/2020)

Mei Suruga & Baliyan Akki vs. Emi Sakura & Kaori Yoneyama

This was a tremendous match of dazzling offense and defense. It was mostly based on speedy movements, but there was an attention to detail, such as the targeting of Emi's bad back. Mei found ways to interject her charming personality as usual, and Akki's physical abilities allowed him to perform some remarkable moves.

[BEST BOUT SELECTION] Miyu Yamashita's Best Matches

What are Miyu Yamashita's best matches?

These are my personal favorites.

I tried my best to provide a short context for each match before explaining what I enjoyed about them.

Stardom - Sendai Cinderella (11/15/2020)

1. Future of Stardom Championship: Maika (c) vs. Saya Iida

This was a hot match to start the show. NEVER Openweight style match filled with heart and fighting spirit. Iida’s physical performance has been good for a while, but she’s also become good at facial expressions too.

***1/2

3. Oedo Tai (Natsuko Tora, Rina & Saki Kashima) vs. Cosmic Angels (Mina Shirakawa, Tam Nakano & Unagi Sayaka)

A solid trios match that showcased the younger and newer wrestlers. Unagi got her baptism in the form of a prolonged beating by Oedo Tai where she took heavy offense and bumps. Rina gave a convincing performance. It’s nice to see her active outside of the kid’s division.

***1/4

5. Momo Watanabe vs. Himeka

This was a good back and forth, both individual performances were good. There some cool sequences and Himeka's big knee strikes sounded brutal. There are people who are concerned about Momo's position in the promotion, but the fact that she is getting high-profile matches on big cards, whether she's winning or losing, means the promotion values her as someone who can reliably deliver in the ring.

***1/2

6. SWA World Championship: Bea Priestley (c) vs. Syuri

This was a rock-solid match. Neither was trying to innovate and stuck to their usual pattern, which led to a good match but one that didn’t deliver on the excitement created by their earlier outings. There was something missing to create that tangible escalation. I’d like to see a rematch in Kanto, where their interactions seemed to have more buzz.

 ***1/2

7. Wonder Of Stardom Championship: Giulia (c) vs. Konami

Giulia’s previous two defenses were flashy and dangerous. This one was more grounded, but it still had the same spirit. It was basically an expanded version of the match these two had in the white belt tournament, with Konami taking most of the match with unrelenting pressure. It definitely felt like a long match, but Giulia’s charisma and gravitas carried it through.

****

8. World Of Stardom Championship: Mayu Iwatani (c) vs. Utami Hayashishita

A great match that hardly felt like its near 30-minute duration. Utami showed a new level of viciousness with her attacks to the head and neck, but it was Mayu who really elevated the match with her bumping and her tenacity as she tried to withstand Utami's onslaught. The composition was so well done that a basic neckbreaker felt significant during the final stages.

NEO Biishiki-gun (Mei Saint-Michel & Saki-sama) vs. Sena Shiori & Suzume (Tokyo Joshi Pro, 11/20/2020)

Tokyo Joshi Pro - Style of My Love (11/20/2020)

NEO Biishiki-gun (Mei Saint-Michel & Saki-sama) vs. Sena Shiori & Suzume

Mei Suruga debuted as the new member of NEO Bii-gun. This was a fun return match for Bii-gun, who brings such an exciting dimension to the TJPW ring. It’s a shame they aren’t more of a fixture in the promotion. Mei was amazing. Her movements, her transitions, the small twists on her signature moves, the introduction of new moves. Her performance was very compelling. Suzume looked good as well, and Sena showed a little growth. The ending was lacking, but I’m looking forward to future developments.

***1/4

Stardom - New Landscape (11/14/2020)

1. Saya Iida vs. Lady C

This was a great debut match for Lady C, who showed solid fundamentals and movement. Iida's facial performance was excellent, both offensively and defensively. The bump she took for Lady C's huge chokeslam and the way she sold it afterward really elevated the match. The tension continued from there until the finish.

***1/2

4. STARS (Mayu Iwatani, Starlight Kid & Gokigen Death) vs. STARS (Tam Nakano, Mina Shirakawa & Unagi Sayaka)

I followed the debuting Sayaka Unagi in her previous promotion. She has a good style, tall and crisp. Her visuals didn't feel out of place in the Stardom ring, especially among the flashy members of STARS. There was some good coordinated offense and drama (mainly between Mayu and Tam). The Tam-trio wasn’t as polished as the Mayu-trio, but they made up for their shortcomings with charisma and energy.

***1/2

5. Artist of Stardom Championship: Donna del Mondo (Giulia, Maika & Syuri) (c) vs. Oedo Tai (Bea Priestley, Natsuko Tora & Saki Kashima)

Great trios match. Both teams were able to show their strong points and there were great stylistic pairings. The feud between Syuri and Bea was at the fore as a prelude to their upcoming match in Sendai, with the two exchanging heavy offense.

****

6. Goddesses of Stardom Championship: Queen's Quest (Saya Kamitani & Utami Hayashishita) (c) vs. Queen's Quest (AZM & Momo Watanabe)

This was a tremendous match. This was the best amongst the QQ vs. QQ matches over the years. It was an exciting battle of generational pride, seniors against juniors. They were all working fantastically, with the action growing more intense as it progressed. Utami and AZM were really going at it at the end.

****1/4

Stardom - Goddesses of Stardom Tag League 2020 (11/8/2020)

3. 10th Goddesses of Stardom Tag League: Queen's Quest (Saya Kamitani & Utami Hayashishita) vs. STARS (Mina Shirakawa & Tam Nakano)

This was a bit of a slow starter, but once it got going it got really good. Tam hit a gorgeous German suplex, not so much because of the form but because of how Utami was thrown. Utami and Mina, who engaged in pre-match provocations, had a great segment against each other where they exchanged heated offense.

***1/2

4. 10th Goddesses of Stardom Tag League: Queen's Quest (AZM & Momo Watanabe) vs. STARS (Mayu Iwatani & Starlight Kid)

Tremendous tag team wrestling from four competitors who share deep chemistry. They worked at a high pace, there was great teamwork and exciting and elaborate sequences. Everyone was on point with their technique and execution, but Kid was really working hard, her timing and rhythm were just too good.

****

5. 10th Goddesses of Stardom Tag League: Donna del Mondo (Himeka & Syuri) vs. Donna del Mondo (Giulia & Maika)

This delivered the violence and fighting spirit a DDM intra-conflict promises on paper. Giulia and Himeka had an exchange that felt like a compact revisitation of their title match. Maika, whose upper back is bandaged up, also had an awesome performance, hitting some cool slams, including an impressive superplex on the big Himeka.

****

6. 10th Goddesses Of Stardom Tag League - Finals: Queen's Quest (AZM & Momo Watanabe) vs. Donna del Mondo (Giulia & Maika)

They carried the momentum of the previous two matches with an action-oriented match. The work rate was high and they were putting together cool moves and double teams. Not everything landed perfectly, but the tension was high throughout the match.

Suzu Suzuki vs. Haruka Umesaki (Ice Ribbon, 10/30/2020)

Ice Ribbon - #1078 ~ Oktober Ice Ribbon Fest 2020 (10/30/2020)

ICExInfinity Championship: Suzu Suzuki (c) vs. Haruka Umesaki

This was the youngest Ice Ribbon Korakuen Hall main event in a long time, with both wrestlers being in their teens. In terms of match structure, this was a major improvement over Suzu's V1. The pacing and building of the moves was well done and both wrestlers were able to show their best points. Haruka has a limited moveset, but she made the most of it, even getting a few convincing near falls.

Gokigen Death & Riho vs. Queen's Quest (Saya Kamitani & Utami Hayashishita) (Stardom, 11/7/2020)

Stardom - Goddesses of Stardom Tag League 2020 (11/7/2020)

Gokigen Death & Riho vs. Queen's Quest (Saya Kamitani & Utami Hayashishita)

A fun match that was comedic but also had good wrestling. The comical moments were incorporated smoothly into the action. The angle between Utami and Riho reminded me of the sexual harassment "comedy" out of old MichiPro intergender matches. It shows the range of Stardom that a women's group can do this kind of thing in a cute way.

***1/2

Wednesday, November 11, 2020

Tokyo Joshi Pro - Wrestle Princess (11/7/2020)

3. International Princess Championship Tournament Semi-Finals: Hikari Noa vs. Mirai Maiumi

A good match that showed the growth of both young wrestlers, but the ending fell flat. Mirai was relentless in applying pressure with her grappling. I've never seen someone put an opponent's arm under their leg for a cover. Hikari's comeback felt short and unconvincing for how dominant her opponent had been.

***1/4

7. Aja Kong & Miyu Yamashita vs. Maki Ito & Sareee

This was a weird mix, but they made the most of it and delivered high-level, dynamic performances. I wanted to see Miyu interact with Sareee more, but the brief moment we got produced fireworks.

***3/4

9. Princess Tag Team Championship: Daydream (Miu Watanabe & Rika Tatsumi) vs. BAKURETSU Sisters (Nodoka Tenma & Yuki Aino)

Miu & Rika don't fit together as personalities, but they have good teamwork and give technically cohesive performances. Bakuretsu gave a spirited fight from underneath against the dominant champion team. Miu was the standout, looking strong and confident. The seniors played more of a supporting role, while the younger Miu and Aino became the focus and created a tense finale.

****

10. Princess of Princess Championship: Yuka Sakazaki (c) vs. Mizuki

This was a great match with exciting technical wrestling and rope-run exchanges. Yuka's groundwork early on was compelling to watch, and Mizuki was doing all sorts of flashy aerial maneuvers as the match unfolded. The match kind of lost focus in the middle, but it improved towards a strong finishing sequence.

Giulia vs. Himeka (Stardom, 10/29/2020)

Stardom - Goddesses of Stardom Tag League 2020 (10/29/2020)

Wonder of Stardom Championship: Giulia (c) vs. Himeka

If Mayu vs Iroha was a shounen match, then this was a seinen match. It was a violent match between dark heroes with emotional depth and coherent storytelling. The offense was hard and heavy and the bumps were big. It was an accumulation of violence and emotion. There was cruelty, but you could also feel the friendship and trust they share. This match contained all of the best aspects of wrestling.

Stardom - Goddesses Of Stardom Tag League 2020 (10/25/2020)

3. 10th Goddesses of Stardom Tag League: STARS (Hanan & Saya Iida) vs. Donna del Mondo (Himeka & Syuri)

Local events aren't always the most reliable when it comes to delivering quality matches, and it is understandable why the performers aren't always going 100% on a local event. Nevertheless, this was an awesome showdown between imposing, physical monsters and small but fiery juniors.

***3/4

4. Queen's Quest (Momo Watanabe & Utami Hayashishita) vs. Oedo Tai (Bea Priestley & Natsuko Tora)

This was a great match, and Momo's feud with Oedo Tai is starting to heat up in the ring. The individual segments were good and there was some great teamwork. Oedo Tai showed again that they can be strong without weapons... until the finish anyway.

***1/2

5. 10th Goddesses of Stardom Tag League: Mina Shirakawa & Tam Nakano vs. STARS (Mayu Iwatani & Starlight Kid)

Mina's STARS assessment match. It was a spirited match that had the kind of liveliness you'd expect from a STARS unit conflict. There were exciting moves, sequences, and a few dramatic twists that made the action unpredictable. Dream H have developed great chemistry, and Mina's progression and fighting spirit is compelling to watch.

Ryo Mizunami vs. Mei Suruga (ChocoPro, 10/4/2020)

ChocoPro - #53 (10/4/2020)

Ryo Mizunami vs. Mei Suruga

The dangers of being pinned was virtually everywhere, with the falls count anywhere stipulation applying to any surface, including walls and objects. They used various items in the environment as weapons in comical and violent ways. They fought all over Ichigaya, from the kitchen to the outside. If Kota Ibushi vs. Minoru Suzuki in the G1 was the best one-take fight scene, then this was the best one-take comedy fight scene.

Stardom - Goddesses of Stardom Tag League 2020 (10/18/2020)

3. Himeka vs. Mina Shirakawa

A good match to showcase Mina, with Himeka acting as the powerhouse heel doing the cut-offs and beatdowns. Mina made use of her grappling and Mexican aerial skills.

***1/4

4. Oedo Tai (Bea Priestley, Konami, Natsuko Tora & Saki Kashima) vs. Donna del Mondo (Giulia, Maika, Natsupoi & Syuri)

This was another great large-scale unit confrontation involving DDM. The highlight of the match was Syuri and Bea's first confrontation, which was so exciting that it elicited six (!) vocal responses from the crowd. That's not a crowd being polite, that's a visceral response from a crowd prohibited from chanting to two monsters going head to head.

***3/4

5. 10th Goddesses Of Stardom Tag League: Queen's Quest (AZM & Momo Watanabe) vs. Queen's Quest (Saya Kamitani & Utami Hayashishita)

Queen’s Quest is a unit that always seems to push each other hard in these "internal conflict" matches. This was a great match pitting the unit's veterans against the juniors. That air raid crash on the apron was nuts.

***3/4

6. World of Stardom Championship: Mayu Iwatani (c) vs. Takumi Iroha

The first match was almost one-sided, with Iroha in control for most of it, but there was parity in this match. It was like watching two shounen protagonists from different stories, at the height of their strength, pushing each other to the limit. The perfect combination of Mayu's zombie-like endurance and Iroha's destructive power.

Ice Ribbon - #1073 ~ Yokohama Ribbon 2020 (10/3/2020)

5. Tsukasa Fujimoto vs. Saori Anou

Fujimoto had one of her strongest performances in a while in this match. She occasionally has opponents who seem to have a synergistic effect on her, and she steps up her game in a big way. Anou was also good, and it was nice to see her show how capable she can be in a gimmick-free match.

***1/2

6. International Ribbon Tag Team Championship: Frank Sisters (Hiragi Kurumi & Mochi Miyagi) (c) vs. Risa Sera & Suzu Suzuki

An epic spot match from Ice Ribbon. This is what this promotion does best, these high-octane tag team matches with seemingly endless sequences and momentum shifts that build up to a big finish. This was loaded with spectacular content.

Takumi Iroha vs. Yuna Manase (GanPuro, 10/6/2020)

 Ganbare Pro - Bad Communication 2020 (10/6/2020)

Takumi Iroha vs. Yuna Manase

A great match between former Stardom wrestlers who have taken their own path. Structurally, it was similar to Takumi Iroha's match against Mayu Iwatani earlier this year, with Iroha dominating with dynamic attacks and Yuna coming back with counters. There was heavy offense exchanged between them and great bumps. Although Yuna is big, she's quite an enthusiastic bumper.

Stardom - Goddesses Of Stardom Tag League 2020 (10/10/2020)

3. STARS (Saya Iida & Tam Nakano) vs. Donna del Mondo (Natsupoi & Syuri)

The storytelling runs so deep in Stardom that even a match that went on third has a narrative behind it. Natsupoi and Tam, who have a history in a previous promotion, faced off for the first time in a long time. Syuri and Tam also clashed beautifully, with Syuri using Tam's former tag team partner's signature moves as psychological warfare. Excellent selling by Iida, who specializes in taking heavy beatings.

***1/2

6. 10th Goddesses Of Stardom Tag League: Queen's Quest (AZM & Momo Watanabe) vs. Donna del Mondo (Giulia & Maika)

Strong start for the tag league. This was an action-oriented match, with great teamwork and all sorts of cool looking moves and sequences. The Giulia and Momo sessions were exciting and promising. I would like to see them in singles competition in the future.

Queen's Quest (AZM, Momo Watanabe, Saya Kamitani & Utami Hayashishita) vs. Donna del Mondo (Giulia, Himeka, Maika & Natsupoi) (Stardom, 10/4/2020)

Stardom - Nagoya Rainbow Fight (10/4/2020)

Elimination: Queen's Quest (AZM, Momo Watanabe, Saya Kamitani & Utami Hayashishita) vs. Donna del Mondo (Giulia, Himeka, Maika & Natsupoi)

DDM and QQ's second impact in Nagoya. An exciting multi-man, everyone had their moments to shine, the action was both exciting and comical. I'm excited to see Natsupoi back in the Stardom ring, she brings a fresh dynamic to DDM as their high-speed player.

Stardom - Yokohama Cinderella (10/3/2020)

1. High Speed Championship: AZM (c) vs. Starlight Kid

This was an incredible way to open the show. When you think the match has peaked, there’s another counter or sudden twist and turn. Each of their best moves couldn’t put the other away so something new was needed. This was one of the best matches ever fought for the High Speed Championship.

****

2. Hanan vs. Mina Shirakawa

This was an impressive debut for Mina. As someone who watched her work in Tokyo Joshi Pro, this was one of her more polished singles performances. They paced and laid out the match well, working in good near-falls.

4. DEATH Yama-san vs. Natsupoi

I wasn't expecting much based on the length of the match, but it was a great debut for Natsupoi. She seemed to be moving twice as fast as she did in TJPW, and it was cute to see her play off the character of DEATH.

***1/4

5. SWA Undisputed Championship (decision): Momo Watanabe vs. Bea Priestley

The fact that a match of this level is in the middle of the card says a lot about how stacked this show was. This was a world-title level bout between two of the most reliable big match performances on the roster, an intense grudge match with brawling, strike battles and big bombs. This could have easily closed a less stacked event.

****1/4

6. Losing Unit Must Disband - No Disqualification: Oedo Tai (Natsuko Tora & Saki Kashima) vs. Tokyo Cyber Squad (Jungle Kyona & Konami)

This was basically the usual good Stardom tag match within the context of a hardcore unit dissolution match. The match felt lacking in drama considering the stipulation, but the action was strong with the highlight being a brutal piledriver through a table.

***1/2

7. Goddesses of Stardom Championship: Queen's Quest (Saya Kamitani & Utami Hayashishita) (c) vs. Donna del Mondo (Himeka & Maika)

A wonderful tag team match made even more impressive by the fact that the performers involved have less than 3 years of in-ring experience. They've all built great chemistry from their individual feuds and it was on display in this match. It was a long match, but everything was well-paced and arranged, and the finish was really great.

****1/4

8. Wonder of Stardom Championship: Giulia (c) vs. Tam Nakano

Giulia vs. Tam has become a shitteno All Japan-style feud where the danger escalates with each match. The first half of the match was devoted to dangerous techniques and the rest of the match was just them emptying their remaining reserves and laying bare their fighting spirit, cutting their wrestling lives in half. This was an epic first defense for the champion.

****1/2

9. World of Stardom Championship: Mayu Iwatani (c) vs. Syuri

Syuri's had her signature matches with Asuka and Hikaru Shida during her heyday, but she's never performed on this scale before against an opponent like Mayu. Syuri's technical and striking superiority allowed her to outclass Mayu in almost every aspect, except for that intangible thing called "heart". Mayu kept coming back from near-death like a zombie every time.

Stardom - 5STAR Grand Prix 2020: 5STAR Special In Korakuen (9/28/2020)

2. Bea Priestley vs. Saya Kamitani

It's nice to see Bea back in singles action. Technically and physically, she looks better than she did before her hiatus. Kamitani, whose singles matches have been very good lately, put up another strong effort. It was a gradually paced match that built into a tense finale, with Kamitani showing grit.

***1/2

3. STARS (Saya Iida & Starlight Kid) vs. Donna del Mondo (Himeka & Maika)

This was a good buffer match for Himeka & Maika heading into their tag title challenge. They actually worked a well laid out match and built to hot near-falls. Himeka & Maika’s combinations looked great, and Iida & Kid were great in the role of junior underdogs.

***1/4

4. Captain's Fall: Oedo Tai (Natsuko Tora, Natsu Sumire & Saki Kashima) vs. Tokyo Cyber Squad (Death Yama-san, Jungle Kyona & Konami)

Despite the "TCS must disband if they lose" billing, this was only another chapter in the prelude to the final showdown in Yokohama. Poor ending aside, this was a great trios match, well arranged with some exciting momentum shifts.

***1/2

5. Mei Hoshizuki & NEW-TRA (Rin Kadokura & Takumi Iroha) vs. Queen's Quest (AZM, Momo Watanabe & Utami Hayashishita)

Stardom crossover matches don't happen very often, so they always feel special when they do. This was a great match with loads of content. It was longer than the usual trios match, but they kept the excitement going by skillfully weaving in subplots and building anticipation for the key encounters.

****1/4

6. STARS (Mayu Iwatani & Tam Nakano) vs. Donna del Mondo (Giulia & Syuri)

An eventful 30 minutes. Both feuds were given ample breathing room to have great segments. Giulia and Tam engaged in some rough fighting and high-impact offense, while Mayu and Syuri exchanged kicks and suplexes. This was a great double prelude to Yokohama, that also featured the fresh pairings of Giulia vs. Mayu and Tam vs. Syuri.

Jungle Kyona vs. Himeka (Stardom, 9/22/2020)

Stardom - 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Special (9/22/2020)

Jungle Kyona vs. Himeka

A super match between the powerhouses of their respective GP blocks in the tournament. This match was defined by parity, with the two exchanging heavy offense and neither gaining an edge over the other. Kyona always conveys struggle well, and the power she displayed when she held Himeka in the air for the Jungle Buster was amazing.

Mei Suruga vs. Yuna Mizumori (ChocoPro, 9/20/2020)

ChocoPro - #49 (9/20/2020)

Nagisa Nozaki vs. Sakura Hirota (WAVE, 9/6/2020)

WAVE - Sunday WAVE Vol. 39 (9/6/2020)

Regina di WAVE Championship: Nagisa Nozaki (c) vs. Sakura Hirota

A very solid title defense for Nozaki. Hirota's kancho was still used, but it was treated more as a serious move than a comedy spot. Hirota's wrestling isn't the sharpest, but she has those crafty veteran instincts and good timing. Nozaki's attacks looked convincing, especially her boots, but her overall performance was lacking depth.

***1/2

Emi Sakura & Riho vs. Mei Suruga & Yuna Mizumori (ChocoPro, 9/27/2020)

 ChocoPro - #50 (9/27/2020)

Emi Sakura & Riho vs. Mei Suruga & Yuna Mizumori

With the theme of "ChocoPro vs. AEW", Riho appeared in Ichigaya for the first time in a long time. This was a 30-minute marathon of diverse and creative offense and defense, and the tension of the finale was tremendous. Emi was amazing in the role of the heel, and some of her attacks were truly brutal. Even though there were no fans, it had the kinetic atmosphere of a match with a live crowd.

****1/2

Mayumi Ozaki vs. Saori Anou (OZ Academy, 8/28/2020)

OZ Academy - Plum Hanasaku ~ OZ No Kuni Buntai Final (8/28/2020)

OZ Academy Openweight Championship: Mayumi Ozaki (c) vs. Saori Anou

The match certainly had spectacular visuals, but I don't think it was a fulfilling match in terms of showing Anou's abilities at a high level. She spent most of her time bumping around for Ozaki's usual antics, and the little bits of offense she did get felt lukewarm. There was never a moment in the match where I was convinced she could win. This felt more like a prolonged one-sided beatdown than a competitive title match at the promotion's biggest show of the year.

***

Ice Ribbon - #1071 ~ Ribbon No Kishi (9/20/2020)

 5. FantastICE Championship - No Rope Lumberjack: Risa Sera (c) vs. Syuri

The Fantast belt is sort of like DDT's EXTREME belt or New Japan's KOPW 2020, where the matches are held with special stipulations. There were some creative and fun moments making use of the gimmick and the assortment of weapons in the ring, but the action never really peaked and the ending came out of nowhere.

***1/4

6. ICExInfinity Championship: Suzu Suzuki (c) vs. Tsukushi

This is the type of joshi pro-wrestling match that I don’t enjoy, when they’re aimlessly doing moves and moves without a story or any sort of defined structure. The moves looked great, but they lacked meaning and had little to no sense of logical escalation.

Tokyo Joshi Pro - Live With Your Time (9/21/2020)

5. MiraClians (Yuka Sakazaki & Shoko Nakajima) vs. Itoh Respect-gun (Mizuki & Maki Itoh)

Reforming Yuka and Mizuki's former tag teams for a title match prelude was great matchmaking. Yuka, Mizuki and Shoko performed as expected, but Itoh stepped up as well. The match was much like last year's 10. 19 KFC tag match, with four wrestlers of equal rank just going at each other for 20 minutes.

6. Natsumi Maki vs. Hikari Noa

Fantastic farewell match for Natsumi, a high speed match with brilliant technique displayed by both wrestlers. The references to their previous matches and tag team were well done. It really felt like Hikari had leveled up as a wrestler and became Natsumi's equal.

****

7. Princess Tag Team Championship: Daydream (Miu Watanabe & Rika Tatsumi) vs. BeeStar (Mirai Maiumi & Suzume)

Although I still don't find the pairing compelling, Miu & Rika's in-ring chemistry deepens with each defense. This match had great teamwork and spectacular sequences. Suzume & Mirai were given a big opportunity to showcase their growing abilities and delivered fantastic performances.

Stardom - 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 (9/19/2020)

 1. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Block A: Syuri vs. Maika

A good, lively opener with fast-paced action and neat counters; Syuri's experience really shows and she always delivers a consistent performance.

***1/4

2. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Block B: Starlight Kid vs. Saya Kamitani

This was a fun match. The kip-up sequence was nicely executed. They're not fast high-flyers by any means, but they're full of energy and have great technique, precision and balance. Kamitani's new "impact" finisher looks great.

***1/4

4. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Block B: Mayu Iwatani vs. Tam Nakano

The best of the three singles these two have had against each other. They packed a lot of emotion and drama into a short timeframe. The locomotion German suplexes from Tam, each with a beautiful bridge, was impressive, as was the finishing combination.

****

5. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Block B: Konami vs. Himeka

I don't understand what some people are talking about with this "Himeka lacks mobility" stuff. Her running moves always have momentum and power behind them. This had some sloppiness, but overall, it was good.

***1/4

6. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Block A: AZM vs. Maika

Aside from the bland ending, this was a really great match. The submission exchanges on the ground were interesting. AZM has been very sharp lately in terms of execution, and Maika was a good base for her aerial attacks.

***1/2

9. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Block A: Syuri vs. Utami Hayashishita

This definitely felt like a long match. It simply lacked the dynamism to keep the action fresh and exciting throughout its duration, but they generally did an excellent job of building tension with back and forth near-falls.

***1/2

10. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Finals: Himeka vs. Utami Hayashishita

Utami performing at this level right after a 20-minute match is a testament to her impressive stamina and endurance. Great heavyweight offense from both wrestlers and the lariat exchanges were excellent. The finishing sequence was amazing and showed how tremendous Utami's power is.

Stardom - 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 (9/13/2020)

6. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Block B: Mayu Iwatani vs. Saya Kamitani

It wasn't as strong as I had hoped, but it was still very good. SayaSaya continues to look very impressive in this tournament. Mayu performed the standing dragon sleeper on a tall opponent for the first time, which was great.

***1/4

7. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Block B: Tam Nakano vs. Giulia

Even though this took place in a small venue, it had a big venue atmosphere and both delivered giant-sized performances. Their chemistry has gotten stronger since the previous encounter, with the execution being spotless this time around. Some of the hits were so brutal that the crowd couldn't help but react, despite the no-chants rule.

****1/4

8. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Block A: Utami Hayashishita vs. Maika

This was probably the weakest of their singles matches. Maika looked good as the hometown hero, but I felt Utami’s performance was lacking a spark.

Stardom - 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 (Night) (9/12/2020)

 2. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Block B: Konami vs. Starlight Kid

This was a burst of action. Little to no downtime as they were just going at it for most of the match, with high speed ropework and counters. There weren’t any particularly strong moments that stood out, but it was a very fun speedy match.

***1/4

8. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Block A: Momo Watanabe vs. Utami Hayashishita

This was a great time out draw. They kept the action varied and exciting throughout, and it had plenty of cool moves and sequences. Momo was especially great on offense. Not as good as the New York match, but a great main event between two young wrestlers.

Stardom - 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 (Day) (9/12/2020)

 3. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Block A: Utami Hayashishita vs. Saya Iida

Good short match. Taking nothing away from Utami's performance, which was strong, but Iida made the match. Iida was working really hard, showing a high workrate with great looking bodywork, transitions and counters.

***1/2

5. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Block B: Tam Nakano vs. Saya Kamitani

Another great tournament match from Kamitani, who has been very consistent in this tournament, with one breakout performance after another. It was fast-moving and energetic, and there were cool moments that made effective use of both wrestlers' flexibility.

***1/2

6. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Block A: Jungle Kyona vs. Natsuko Tora

Good match to heat up the TCS-Oedo Tai feud. Both wrestlers have a history as teammates and their chemistry was present in the ring. That Jungle Buster sequence was just an amazing display of strength and balance.

***1/4

9. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Block A: Syuri vs. AZM

Very good match and one of the best singles matches from Syuri’s Stardom run. They found a good rhythm and were going back and forth with some crisp offense and defense.

Stardom - 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 (9/6/2020)

2. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Block A: Jungle Kyona vs. Saya Iida

This was a great high-paced striking match between former JAN teammates, that packed a lot of action for its short duration. Iida, who is inspired by Tomohiro Ishii, really nailed his "staggered" selling during the strike exchanges.

***1/2

3. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Block B: Himeka vs. Saya Kamitani

I thought it was going to be tough for these two to go the distance in a 20-minute match given their relative inexperience, but they pulled it off beautifully. Their frustration and desperation came through well in their performances and they did an amazing job of keeping the match interesting.

***3/4

Thursday, September 10, 2020

Stardom - 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 (9/5/2020)

6. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Block B: Giulia vs. Saya Kamitani

I didn't expect these two to match up stylistically as well as they did; their chemistry was excellent. Giulia was the feisty veteran who was trying to fire up the junior Kamitani. The triangle choke counter sequence was super slick and awesome. This match was a great display of Giulia's ability to bring out the best in a less experienced opponent.

***1/2

8. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Block B: Mayu Iwatani vs. Konami

Konami has been playing a very aggressive role in singles lately, with targeted offense and convincing submission work. Mayu did a great job of selling and bumping as usual. A strong main event with a great finish.

Tokyo Joshi Pro - Tokyo Princess Cup 2020 (8/29/2020)

2. Tokyo Princess Cup 2020 - Semi-Finals: Mizuki vs. Maki Itoh

This was a story-driven match, but the audience couldn't react in any way other than to applaud so it didn't come across as strong. Mizuki's positioning seemed off at moments, her face-lock transitions were slow and weak. She didn't have a good performance here. Itoh was about the level you’d expect, and had a couple of cool headbutt spots.

3. Tokyo Princess Cup 2020 - Semi-Finals: Shoko Nakajima vs. Miyu Yamashita

This was really good. A step-up from their title match last year, but with a weaker finish. Miyu used her size and strength to brutally impose her will on the smaller opponent. There were some creative spots that I've never seen from either performer before, and that German Suplex was one of the sickest bumps I've ever seen in TJPW.

***3/4

6. Tokyo Princess Cup 2020 - Finals: Shoko Nakajima vs. Mizuki

This was a great tournament final. Shoko and Mizuki really work well together, as you can see from their previous matches. High level technical wrestling and high flying, innovative in both offense and defense, and an exciting apron battle. These two bring out the best in each other.

Mei Suruga vs. SAKI (ChocoPro, 8/22/2020)

 ChocoPro - #42 (8/22/2020)

Mei Suruga vs. SAKI

An amazing match that defied expectations. The best match I've ever seen from ChocoPro, with SAKI, who is an underrated but skilled and clever wrestler, giving one of her finest performances. Mei kept the match lively with her character work and distinct charm. The counter-wrestling between them was both innovative and exciting to watch.

Tokyo Joshi Pro - Tokyo Princess Cup 2020 (8/15/2020)

4. Tokyo Princess Cup 2020 - Quarter Final: Mizuki vs. Yuki Aino

Aino delivered another surprisingly compelling performance in this clash of styles. She has quickly become a reliable and consistent performer. Mizuki has shown an aggressive approach lately with her foot stomps and all the ways she finds to hit them.

***1/2

6. Tokyo Princess Cup 2020 - Quarter Final: Shoko Nakajima vs. Natsumi Maki

This was a great high speed-style match. Shoko may be one of the few wrestlers on the roster who can compete with Natsumi in speed and precision. This had excellent ropework, technique and bumps from both.

***3/4

Stardom - 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 (8/9/2020)

2. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Blue Block: Saya Iida vs. Maika

This was a good sprint-style match. They developed a good chemistry and took each other's offense well. The near-falls were very well done. The selling and bumping of Iida was particularly impressive.

***1/2

3. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Red Block Block: Mayu Iwatani vs. Starlight Kid

This was a great match. Mayu was the perfect base for Starlight Kid's offense, taking maniacal bumps. Kid isn't an athletic high-flyer, but she has a good sense of balance. Mayu's Gory special counter to the Yoshi Tonic was very cool.

***3/4

4. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Blue Block: Momo Watanabe vs. AZM

Similar to the one before it, this was a senior vs. junior style match. AZM tried to overwhelm Momo with her ropework and speedy attacks, and Momo picked her spots with counters. Some timing issues aside, this match was very good.

***3/4

5. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Red Block: Konami vs. Tam Nakano

Konami was putting on the pressure with hard strikes and grinding submission work, while Tam fought from underneath with her usual grit. Tam's comeback may have been too brief, but the spin kicks to the head seemed convincing enough.

***1/2

8. 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Red Block: Giulia vs. Himeka

This was better than expected. Both are only in their second year, but they put on a match suitable for a Korakuen Hall main event. They developed a nice pace and traded heavy blows. The finishing sequence was a bit awkward, but the finish itself was brutal.

***1/2

Mayu Iwatani vs. Giulia (Stardom, 8/8/2020)

 Stardom - 5STAR Grand Prix 2020 (8/8/2020)

5STAR Grand Prix 2020 Red Block: Mayu Iwatani vs. Giulia

A great match between the promotion's top titleholders. They worked a high pace and were bringing out the big moves earlier than usual, which made the match feel special. Giulia's ability to control her opponent on the ground with her legs is super compelling.

Ice Ribbon - #1057 ~ Ice Ribbon Yokohama Bunka Gymnasium Final (8/9/2020)

2. Akane Fujita & Asahi vs. Miku Aono & Mio Shirai

Mio has been working as a trainer for Ice Ribbon, so it's no wonder she hasn't lost much of a step. Asahi had a good showing of teamwork with Fujita in her return match. A better match than you would normally see on the undercard.

***1/2

7. International Ribbon Tag Team Championship: Dropkickers (Tsukasa Fujimoto & Tsukushi) (c) vs. Frank Sisters (Hiiragi Kurumi & Mochi Miyagi)

The theme of this match is that Tsukasa Fujimoto wants Tsukushi and Kurumi to solve their personal issues, but you don't need to know the story to enjoy it. It was a tag team match worth watching, with everyone doing their part well. Tsukushi and Kurumi were the core of the match, with Fujimoto and Mochi acting as support.

****1/4

8.  ICExInfinity Championship: Maya Yukihi (c) vs. Suzu Suzuki

This wasn't a major improvement over previous matches in the series. If anything, the previous matches were shorter and perhaps more easy to watch. There were exciting sequences and dramatic kickouts, and an overall sense of scale not seen in previous Yokohama Bunka main events, but there was also a lot of dead space, especially during the mid stages. Overall, it was not as cohesive as it could have been.

Tokyo Joshi Pro - Tokyo Princess Cup 2020 (8/10/2020)

 5. Tokyo Princess Cup 2020 - Second Round: Miyu Yamashita vs. Hikari Noa

Miyu looked massive compared to Hikari. The difference in size was very evident. Miyu showed that she was more than a striker with cool submission counters. Hikari was rough and unconvincing at times, but she showed grit and determination, and her 2.9999 near-fall was tremendous.

***1/2

6. Tokyo Princess Cup 2020 - Second Round: Yuka Sakazaki vs. Hyper Misao

This was a great, championship caliber match. Pacing was on point and everything was well-executed. Splendid mixture of comedy and traditional wrestling. Misao was able to give a strong fight while still staying true to her gimmick.

Stardom - Cinderella Summer In Tokyo (7/26/2020)

4. STARS (Mayu Iwatani & Saya Iida) vs. Donna del Mondo (Himeka & Syuri)

Mayu's interactions with DDM were fresh and interesting, looking forward to seeing her work singles matches with Syuri and Himeka in the near future. Iida's developing into a Tomohiro Ishii-esque brawler-technician. Those gatling elbow strikes looked cool.

***1/2

5. High Speed Championship: Riho (c) vs. AZM vs. Starlight Kid

I was a little disappointed Riho wasn't involved in the finish... I know she has to be protected, but I wanted to see at least one successful somato. This was really fun, there was great timing and crisp execution. The true essence of high speed was on display in this match. While these matches never reach a high level, they're always easy to watch.

***1/2

6. Goddesses of Stardom Championship (vacant): Queen's Quest (Saya Kamitani & Utami Hayashishita) vs. Tokyo Cyber Squad (Jungle Kyona & Konami)

Kyona & Konami looked awesome, the way they were controlling the ring. Utami & Saya were able to break through the veteran team's stronghold by putting together double team flurries. This was a good match to decide the new champions.

***1/2

7. Wonder of Stardom Championship Tournament - Finals: Tam Nakano vs. Giulia

This match was a classic and one of my favorites of the year. Another emotionally-charged battle from Tam Nakano, who always brings a variety of emotions to big matches. Similar to Giulia's match with Hana, this one had dangerous techniques such as head butts, steep suplexes and avalanche moves. The lack of chanting only accentuated some of the violence on display. The deliberate pacing of the match allowed them to touch on several themes and build up to a great climax. These two have brilliant chemistry in ring and out.

 DDT - Summer Vacation 2020 (7/23/2020)

KO-D Six Man Tag Team Championship: Eruption (Kazusada Higuchi, Saki Akai & Yukio Sakaguchi) (c) vs. Antonio Honda, HARASHIMA & Riho

I can do without Antonio Honda interrupting the flow of a match to do his microphone performance shtick every time... This was a great trios match, the action moved fast and there were dynamic pairings. Of course Riho's performance is the one I found most exciting, every time she stepped into the ring things got interesting.

Stardom - Cinderella Summer in Nagoya (7/24/2020)

4. Queen's Quest (AZM, Momo Watanabe, Saya Kamitani & Utami Hayashishita) vs. Donna del Mondo (Giulia, Himeka, Maika & Syuri)

An excellent 8-man that was loaded with content. The main pairings produced some awesome exchanges, and there was generally good timing and chemistry throughout. The pacing was so good that it was hard to believe the match ran for 30-minutes.

****

5. World of Stardom Championship: Mayu Iwatani (c) vs. Jungle Kyona

One of the most elusive matchups in Stardom's history finally realized. Mayu continued her run of excellent performances, with incredible offense and defense. Kyona conveyed her struggle well, with strong near-falls and tribute sequences to the fallen TCS leader. The action was kept dynamic enough that a lack of chanting didn't hurt as much.

Tokyo Joshi Pro - Tokyo Princess Cup 2020 (8/9/2020)

3. Tokyo Princess Cup 2020 - Second Round: Mizuki vs. Suzume

Mizuki and Suzume both have a counter-based technical style and they worked well together here. Both wrestlers showed precise execution, with Suzume looking especially sharp, and scoring good near-falls, in what was her strongest showing so far.

***1/2

5. Tokyo Princess Cup 2020 - Second Round: Miu Watanabe vs. Mirai Maiumi

Mirai looks like she's squeezed her mid section, but you probably wouldn't notice with the costume she wears. Good focused match, where both had game plans. Miu's tenderization of Mirai's back was brutal. The double wristlock from Mirai looked strong and she landed a gnarly lariat in the corner. I wasn't convinced by Miu's comeback, which felt too brief, but the overall match was good.

***1/2

6. Tokyo Princess Cup 2020 - Second Round: Rika Tatsumi vs. Yuki Aino

This wasn't the hottest match on the card even though it was the main event, but they had a good, coherent match. Aino's always showing something new in her matches. Maybe that constant growth is why the promotion evaluates her highly.

Tokyo Joshi Pro - Tokyo Princess Cup 2020 (8/8/2020)

5. Tokyo Princess Cup 2020 - First Round: Miyu Yamashita vs. Raku

***1/4

6. Tokyo Princess Cup 2020 - First Round: Yuka Sakazaki vs. Nodoka Tenma

This was a good main event, the building and placement of the moves was well done. Yuka showed her spectacular 450 once more, which looked even better than the first. I would have liked to have seen more from Nodoka in the main event spot, as I felt she wasn't on Yuka's level, but she gave a solid effort.

Arisa Nakajima vs. Yoshiko (SEAdLINNNG, 7/13/2020)

SEAdLINNNG - Close To You (7/13/2020)

SEAdLINNNG Beyond the Sea Championship: Arisa Nakajima (c) vs. Yoshiko

This match felt like all of its 26 minutes. There was a lack of variety in terms of moves and the pacing felt largely the same. The moves were spectacular and well-executed, but I'd like a match with more range. This was moves upon moves, suplex, lariat, elbow, repeat; devoid of meaning or drama. I never thought I would see a swan dive German suplex feel so inconsequential in a match. It was just a move amongst many.

 ChocoPro - #29 (7/5/2020)

Riho & Yuna Mizumori vs. Baliyan Akki & Mei Suruga

It was nice seeing Riho back in Ichigaya. There were some dull portions, mostly in early stages, but this was generally good, with Gatoh Move's signature innovative tag team wrestling on display in some awesome sequences. Riho has become a world-class wrestler since leaving, but her former peers have grown a lot as well.

Stardom - Explode in Summer (7/17/2020)

 6. Wonder of Championship Tournament - First Round: Konami vs. Giulia

A great physical match with an optimal layout. Konami had the least credible case for being a title contender of the "white belt shitteno" and that was perhaps what made her most dangerous. She took much of the match with submission holds and hard hitting offense. Giulia, who was supported by chants from female fans despite rules prohibiting chants, fought an uphill battle with fierce counterattacks.

****

 7. Wonder of Championship Tournament - First Round: Tam Nakano vs. Natsuko Tora

Although it could have used a stronger finish as a main event, this was a fun match. Natsuko looked comfortable as a monster heel, and Tam's performance was on-point as well. These two changed a lot since their first meeting, but the chemistry is still there.

Riho & STARS (Starlight Kid & Tam Nakano) vs. Donna del Mondo (Giulia, Himeka & Maika)

Tokyo Joshi Pro - Brand New Wrestling 4 ~ Ubau Nakare, Atae Tamae ~ (7/23/2020)

4. Yuki Kamifuku vs. Mina Shirakawa

6. Princess Tag Team Championship: Daydream (Miu Watanabe & Rika Tatsumi) (c) vs. Hyper Misao & Shoko Nakajima

This match was very good. There were some elaborate sequences and transitions that were surprisingly executed well. Shoko in particular seemed to be in peak form during this match. The match got off to a slowish start, but improved as it progressed.

***1/2

7. Princess of Princess Championship: Yuka Sakazaki (c) vs. Yuki Aino

Yuka wrestled a perfect main event that brought out the best in the challenger. Aino showed herself to be a convincing title contender, hitting bigger moves and scoring believable near-falls. There were intense counters during the final stages as each struggled to hit their signature move, and the finish was superb.

Mayu Iwatani vs. Saki Kashima (Stardom, 3/8/2020)

Stardom - No People Gate (3/8/2020)

Mayu Iwatani vs. Saki Kashima

Mayu's wrestling IQ shone through in this match. She took advantage of a unique situation and brought out the best in Kashima and the lumberjack stipulation. Mayu's long tumble down the stairs was a sight to behold, and Kashima's reference to the promotion's first lumberjack match, using the strike combination she used against Yuzupon, was a cool touch.

Ice Ribbon - #1046 ~ Yokohama Ribbon 2020 (6/13/2020)

ICExInfinity Championship: Maya Yukihi (c) vs. Suzu Suzuki

This was an improvement over their previous title match in Yokohama, but fell short of expectations. Both have undergone character transformations since then, with Yukihi becoming a heel and Suzu becoming a ninja, which added a new dimension to the matchup. The taunting at the beginning was fun, and there were some really cool sequences and moves throughout, but the match never felt like it shifted into that next gear. Moreover, Suzu never felt like she was even close to becoming the champion despite her momentum coming in.

SEAdLINNNG - Delivered To You! (6/13/2020)

SEAdLINNNG Beyond the Sea Championship: Arisa Nakajima (c) vs. ASUKA

This was a good match, although it felt like it dragged at parts. Slowly building from groundwork to heavy attacks may not work well with no-fans. But I did enjoy the groundwork, with ASUKA using her power advantage and Nakajima targeting the leg. The leg work was sold well, but unfortunately didn't lead to anything particularly interesting. Both wrestlers traded tremendous offense in the mid to latter stages, with ASUKA using some crushing power moves.

A well paced iron-man match with a unique layout. They went for something different from other iron-man matches and they pulled it off well. Yoshiko vs. Saori Anou (AWG, 4/30/2019)

AWG - Actwres girl'Z in Korakuen (4/30/2019)

Yoshiko vs. Saori Anou

A solid match that could have been better. It started exciting, but they slowed things down suddenly and from there it was a start-stop pacing that I didn't find very compelling for the feud they had built. Too much of the match was spent with Yoshiko applying holds to Anou and Anou reaching the rope after a stretch of time. One or two peril segments is fine, but four of them is a bit much. And the crowd wasn’t getting any hotter because of them. Anou's comebacks were lacking too. She could have put up more of a fight. Yoshiko took most of the match and won in a dominant fashion.

This was a great match, the best singles match I've seen from Saori Anou personally. They both brought tension and drama and everything felt like it was executed at a good pace. This match was lacking a spark. I thought the difference in personalities would create an interesting dynamic, but it really didn't. It felt like they were doing moves without any feeling behind them or a story in mind. For a title decision match, it lacked a sense of drama. There were some great looking moves, flashy offense and counters from both, but nothing to sink your teeth into. As an exhibition of moves, it was a solid fun watch.

Emi Sakura vs. Baliyan Akki (ChocoPro, 5/4/2020)

ChocoPro - #10 (5/4/2020)

Emi Sakura vs. Baliyan Akki

One of the best ChocoPro matches so far. Emi was working hard, showing her brilliance with clever matwork and counters. Akki's amazing physical ability allows him to do some awesome moves, and he was explosive on offense. The finishing sequence, where they go back and forth with counters, was very intense, especially for a show with no fans.

Ryo Mizunami vs. Mei Suruga (ChocoPro, 5/3/2020)

ChocoPro #9 (5/3/2020)

Ryo Mizunami vs. Mei Suruga

This was a good main event. Both wrestlers are known for their charisma so there was lots of personality on display. No fans in attendance allowed them to make full use of the Ichigaya venue for some unique spots and brawling. Mei received brutal chest punishment with those chops from Mizunami.

Sayaka Obihiro vs. Antonio Honda (ChocoPro, 4/29/2020

ChocoPro - #8 (4/29/2020)

Sayaka Obihiro vs. Antonio Honda

Obihiro's return match from injury. The match transitions from some hit-or-miss comedy into a hard-hitting, emotional struggle. Thought the shift in tone was executed in a way that was almost unnoticeable. Honda played the bully well in the way that he systematic picked apart Obihiro with a rough leg workover. Really good match.

Ryo Mizunami vs. Tsukasa Fujimoto (WAVE, 6/5/2016)

WAVE - Catch the WAVE 2016 ~Namijo Kesshosen~ (6/5/2016)

Catch the WAVE 2016 Finals: Ryo Mizunami vs. Tsukasa Fujimoto

An awesome match and easily one of my favorite matches from Fujimoto's catalog. Both wrestlers gave strong performances, showing a real drive to win, and built to a hot finish. There was a new level of viciousness from Fujimoto, rarely seen in her home promotion. And Mizunami drops Fujimoto on her head a bunch with some devastating offense. This was also one of the rare instances in recent years where WAVE drew a strong crowd at Korakuen Hall so the atmosphere was great for the tournament finals.

Io Shirai vs. Mayu Iwatani (Stardom, 5/15/2016)

Stardom - Gold May 2016 (5/15/2016)

World of Stardom Championship: Io Shirai (c) vs. Mayu Iwatani

This was such an amazing match. An absolute classic. Io is known to be a master technician and high flyer, but she can also deliver a beatdown. The stomps and kicks she delivered to Mayu in the early stages were almost hard to watch. Mayu had won the Cinderella tournament, this was her third opportunity at the Red belt, and she gave an all-time performance against her Thunder Rock tag partner. Everything here felt pristine, offense and defense, hard strikes and suplexes.

Nagisa Nozaki vs. Miyuki Takase (WAVE, 3/21/2020)

WAVE - Osaka Rhapsody Vol. 47 (3/21/2020)

Regina Di WAVE Championship: Nagisa Nozaki (c) vs. Miyuki Takase

A rematch, this time with Miyuki positioned as the title challenger in Nozaki’s home promotion. This was a slow starter, with some awesome exchanges of strikes and slick counters when the action picks up. Takase was once again fantastic with her bumping and selling of Nozaki’s offense.

Stardom - Cinderella Tournament 2020 (3/24/2020)

1. Cinderella Tournament 2020 - First Round: Momo Watanabe vs. Starlight Kid

This was a fun opening round that established the over-the-top elimination element of the tournament. Momo countering a yoshi tonic with the B Driver was amazing.

***1/4

2. Cinderella Tournament 2020 - First Round: Jungle Kyona vs. Giulia

Giulia had bandages all over her neck and she got dropped straight on her head by a powerslam that clearly took something out of her since her movement became worse. Amazingly the match itself didn't suffer much, as they exchanged heavy offense and built up the intensity. It was short, but Giulia endured a lot and came out of it looking strong.

4. Cinderella Tournament 2020 - First Round: Syuri vs. Jamie Hayter

This was awesome for its length, which was about 4-minutes. A fast-paced back and forth where they really maximized the time given and created a special encounter.

***1/2

7. Cinderella Tournament 2020 - First Round: Utami Hayashishita vs. Maika

Another great match between these two, with a focus on the fundamentals and exchanging judo techniques. This was just Maika's 25th career match and she already feels like someone who has been around for more than a year.

8. Cinderella Tournament 2020 - First Round: Mayu Iwatani vs. Hana Kimura

This was a fun match, with some exciting elimination teases. They showed personality and worked well off of each other.

13. Cinderella Tournament 2020 - Finals: Natsuko Tora vs. Giulia

The finals of the tournament was a "heel vs. heel" match, but Natsuko made a sympathetic figure out of Giulia, who had endured heavy damage coming into the match, by being the nastier, more violent heel. A hard hitting bout with some amazing moments, such as the shoten countered into an octopus hold.

Ice Ribbon - #1029 ~ Ice Ribbon March 2020 (3/14/2020)

4. Tsukasa Fujimoto vs. Suzu Suzuki

Tsukasa's wrestling had a marked looseness at times, but her strong ring sense made up for her shortcomings. And she was hitting some hard kicks. Suzu’s athletic ability and technical skill are just remarkable. She showed some flashy moves and did a good job establishing her new style.

6. ICExInfinity Championship: Maya Yukihi (c) vs. Hiiragi Kurumi

Kurumi was a monster in this match, showing a wide range of techniques and some real explosiveness. The Bastard Driver on the apron early on was awesome. There’s also a moment in the match where she shows a rare moment of rage and attacks Yukihi with stomps to the head. Yukihi, who has gone from ace to antagonist, played the heel with relentless strikes and grinding arm work that factored nicely into the finish.

Miyu Yamashita vs. Natsumi Maki (Tokyo Joshi Pro, 3/21/2020)

Tokyo Joshi Pro - Spring Tour '20 ~ HEART & BODY ~ (3/21/2020)

Miyu Yamashita vs. Natsumi Maki

This was as good as the first match. They did a good job expanding from the first two encounters, with Natsumi stepping up and becoming Miyu's equal. The layout of the match had a feeling of Miyu’s older title defenses with its careful build towards dramatic counters and exchanges at the end.

****

Miyuki Takase vs. Nagisa Nozaki (AWG, 3/21/2020)

AWG - Beginning (3/21/2020)

AWG Championship: Miyuki Takase (c) vs. Nagisa Nozaki

This was the best AWG match I’ve seen so far. They kept the action exciting with a high pacing, and there were flashy moves and counters, and some great bumping. Takase in particular was really good with her bumps, and she made fiery comebacks.

Yoshiko vs. Sareee (Diana, 2/22/2020)

Diana (2/22/2020)

Yoshiko vs. Sareee

Good match, the only real downside was the outside brawl which almost never look good on nicopro's hardcam. Sareee looked ferocious on offense, and Yoshiko showed off surprisingly technical skills with some nice transitions. It was nice to see these two meet in the ring one last time, they have a unique chemistry.

Riho vs. Nyla Rose (AEW, 10/2/2019)

AEW - Dynamite #1 (10/2/2019)

AEW Women's World Championship (decision): Riho vs. Nyla Rose

Nyla's pacing, facial expressions and mannerisms were on point. Riho was compelling as the physically overmatched underdog with fighting spirit, and the strong crowd support for her produced one of the best and most emotional comeback sequences of the year. This was an amazing match, and one of the best television matches I've ever seen.

Yuna Mizumori vs. Kuishinbo Kamen (Gatoh Move, 1/11/2020)

Gatoh Move - gtmv #30 (1/11/2020)

Yuna Mizumori vs. Kuishinbo Kamen

Another “openweight” Mizumori match. This one integrated comedy into traditional wrestling in a way that was seamless and not overwhelming. There’s some fun antics with the referee (Aoi Kizuki) getting involved. Kuishinbo has masterful comedic timing.

Yuna Mizumori vs. Yasu Urano (Gatoh Move, 1/13/2020)

Gatoh Move - gtmv #31 (1/13/2020)

Yuna Mizumori vs. Yasu Urano

Good intergender singles, with Yuna continuing the theme of being able to go blow-for-blow with male opponents. She’s about the size of the average indie wrestler in Japan. Although maybe not quite as strong. Urano is a wizard on the mat and a great heel prick.

Stardom - The Way to Major League (2/8/2020)

3. Artist of Stardom Championship: Queen's Quest (AZM, Momo Watanabe & Utami Hayashishita) (c) vs. Donna del Mondo (Giulia, Maika & Syuri)

One of the best Artist matches in recent memory. The mini-feuds running through the match were good and each of them felt unique. Maika looked beyond her years, showing confidence and deadly judo techniques. Syuri looked motivated working with fresh opponents. And Giulia was the most comfortable she’s been in a Stardom ring so far. Although this wasn’t DDM’s debut, this was a great “coming out” for them.

****

4. Wonder of Stardom Championship: Arisa Hoshiki (c) vs. Bea Priestley

Another great title defense from Arisa. Bea has been presented as one of the strongest wrestlers on the roster so this really felt like one of the champion’s toughest challenges yet. There was heavy striking, and dynamic counters and sequences.

***3/4

5. Mayu Iwatani vs. Takumi Iroha

This was originally supposed to be Mayu Iwatani vs. Sareee, but Takumi Iroha was called in as a last minute replacement of the latter. Iroha controlled the pace, with power and precision striking, while Mayu fought from underneath with slick counters and aerial maneuvers. Iroha's attacks on the bandaged shoulder of Mayu were brutal; and Mayu's ragdoll selling sold the explosive power of Iroha. This was an epic meeting of aces.

Tokyo Joshi Pro - Tokyo Joshi 2020 Winter ~wonderful harmony~ (2/11/2020)

5. Pandemic Boo-Boo (Hikari Noa & Natsumi Maki) vs. Mirai Maiumi & Mizuki

This was a very good tag match. Pandeboo (Natsumi & Hikari) haven’t teamed up in a 2v2 format since Natsumi’s injury, but they haven’t missed a step as one of the best tag teams in the promotion. This had lots of exciting sequences and combination moves.

***3/4

6. Princess of Princess Championship: Yuka Sakazaki (c) vs. Lana Austin

Probably one of Yuka’s hardest-hitting bouts. They were throwing slugs. Yuka showed an aggressive side with some of her offense, that tree-of-woe backbreaker is a violent addition to her moveset. Lana seemed fundamentally solid, but lacked stamina, as she was breathing heavily throughout the match. The match could have used something to build around to make things more interesting, but it was a good heavy-hitter.

Riho vs. Nyla Rose (AEW, 2/12/2020)

AEW - Dynamite #19 (2/12/2020

AEW Women's World Championship: Riho (c) vs. Nyla Rose

I loved this as much as their first match. Riho and Nyla feel like natural opponents, the face and heel dynamic between them is defined and easy to understand, and they always get the crowd excited. There were many great sequences involving Nyla being a giant monster and Riho being the undersized underdog using her speed and technical advantage. Riho also showed a rare intensity, the running dropkick across the table and dragon suplexes were awesome.

Mei Suruga vs. Kagetsu (Gatoh Move, 2/9/2020)

Gatoh Move - gtmv #35 (2/9/2020)

Mei Suruga vs. Kagetsu

This felt like a special encounter, even in a shithole like Basement Monster. Both wrestlers were able to show off their unique and different styles as they traded offense and defense. Kagetsu looked to be having a lot of fun and put over Mei strong with her selling, and there were some great near-falls.

AEW Dark #18 (1/22/2020)

Kenny Omega & Riho vs. Kip Sabian & Penelope Ford

I heard good reviews for this match, but it exceeded my expectations. The smooth flow of the action from one spot into another made for an exciting match; there was impressive coordination shown by both teams. And the nighttime setting and closeness of the crowd to the ring gave the match a warm and intimate feeling.

Stardom - 9th Anniversary in Osaka (1/26/2020)

4. STARS (Arisa Hoshiki & Saya Iida) vs. Donna del Mondo (Giulia & Maika)

This was more fun than I was expecting. The Giulia/Arisa interactions were promising, and Iida is becoming a surprisingly compelling wrestler with this Giulia feud. Iida stood out a lot. Maika was good here as well, with those judo techniques and that devastating double team maneuver.

6. SWA World Championship: Utami Hayashishita (c) vs. Jamie Hayter

Jamie’s work on top wasn’t interesting, but it was effective. Utami still lacks fire in her comebacks to make them exciting. I was more interested in the match result than the match. I think Jamie will defend against Kyona soon, since their feud didn’t reach a direct conclusion at Korakuen.

7. Kagetsu & Mayu Iwatani vs. JKGReeeeN (Jungle Kyona & Momo Watanabe)

An epic main event for Kagetsu's farewell, with the pillars of Stardom's previous era engaging in dynamic tag action. Momo and Mayu, who were coming off of a great title match at Korakuen Hall, had awesome exchanges, and Kyona surpassing Kagetsu made for a strong finish.

Tokyo Joshi Pro - Tokyo Joshi 2020 Winter ~wonderful harmony~ (1/25/2020)

Miyu Yamashita vs. Natsumi Maki

It was refreshing to see Miyu work a simpler big match, that was straightforward and easy to follow, without the excess of some of her recent big matches. This was a simple and focused match with a careful build to a big exchange at the end. They touched on the size differential nicely, and there were solid fundamentals shown by both in the early grappling and ground moments.

Stardom - 9th Anniversary (1/19/2020)

1. Zoey Skye vs. AZM vs. Starlight Kid

This was a solid opener where everyone got their moment to shine on offense. Dust has shown improvements since her last tour, working at a higher tempo and showing more expressions. The double tree-of-woe stomp and AZM’s triangle dropkick were highlights.

3. Kagetsu vs. Tam Nakano

It was nice to see Tam and Kagetsu go at it one last time. This wasn’t my favorite singles match between them, but the story was good. The finishing sequence was done well with Tam needing something extra to finally overcome Kagetsu.

4. Goddesses of Stardom Championship: Tokyo Cyber Squad (Jungle Kyona & Konami) (c) vs. Bea Priestley & Jamie Hayter

Good, physical tag match. The main pairings (Kyona vs. Hayter, Bea vs. Konami) were good together and produced hard-hitting exchanges. The peril session on Kyona, with Bea & Jamie working her injured shoulder, was good. Bea as a tag team worker feels fresh, and this bruiser heel tag team she's formed with Jamie quickly became one of my new favorites during the tag league. I was stoked when I heard they won the belts.

****

5. Tokyo Cyber Squad (DEATH Yama-san, Hana Kimura & Leyla Hirsch) vs. Donna del Mondo (Giulia, Maika & Syuri)

I was waiting for Sakura Kasugano to come out when XX’s music played. Syuri has been around since the HUSTLE days. She’s experienced the ups and downs of the business, so it’s great to see her back on a major platform in what's looking to be a strong year for her. Fine match overall, rough at times, but mostly fun to watch.

6. Wonder of Stardom Championship: Arisa Hoshiki (c) vs. Utami Hayashishita

There's a unique feel to Arisa's title defenses in Korakuen Hall. They've become an attraction. Arisa showed a sadistic side with those closed-fists to a bleeding Utami. Utami had some creative counters for the SSC, and that reverse neckbreaker submission transitioned into a slam was awesome. The bloodshed here made this a little more memorable than it perhaps would have been without it.

***3/4

7. World of Stardom Championship: Mayu Iwatani (c) vs. Momo Watanabe

This match felt like a return to form for Mayu from an individual performance standpoint. Her movements were smooth and she was deploying some unique and flashy offense. The reverse frankensteiner from the turnbuckle looked as amazing as it did when she used it against Io some years ago. Momo's performance was on par with the best of her White Belt era. The dull sounds from her kicks were as vicious as ever.

Stardom - New Years Stars 2020 (Night) (1/11/2020)

5. Tokyo Cyber Squad (Hana Kimura, Jungle Kyona & Leyla Hirsch) vs. Oedo Tai (Jamie Hayter, Saki Kashima & Zoey Skye)

The focus of the match was the feud between Kyona and Jamie, and they had hard-hitting heavyweight-style exchanges. Hana’s getting a lot of mileage out of that hammerlock between the ropes, which has quickly become one of my new favorite signature techniques of hers. Oedo Tai were able to chain moves together seamlessly, no one seemed out of place despite the “newness” of the trio.

6. STARS (Arisa Hoshiki, Mayu Iwatani & Tam Nakano) & Riho vs. Queen's Quest (Bea Priestley, Leo Onozaki, Momo Watanabe & Utami Hayashishita)

Strong build up for the upcoming Korakuen Hall main card, with Arisa & Utami and Mayu & Momo going at it in intense exchanges. There was also an “AEW confrontation” between Riho and Bea, who traded offense and defense. Riho in Stardom is a different monster. She can really up the viciousness.
